How to Care For Your Professional Extensions

Whether you already have extensions and are learning how to take care of them or are thinking about getting extensions and want to know more before you commit, you are in the right place! Once you have your extensions, you want to keep them looking great and protect your extensions to prolong their life of your extensions! Here are some important tips for keeping your extensions fabulous!

Brush Often

Just like your natural hair gets tangled, your extensions will tangle too. Brushing your extensions is important and recommended twice a day, morning and night. If your hair gets tangled, it's good to make a habit of carrying around a brush or a wide-toothed comb to prevent damage. When brushing your extensions, you want to prevent damage. To do this, place a hand at the top of your row while brushing your hair to reduce the amount of pulling on your extensions.

Limit How Often You Wash Your Hair

When you have extensions, you should only be washing your hair around 2 times a week. If you wash your hair more often, you’ll risk drying out your hair. When your extensions are drier, they can break more easily. This can lead to shedding in your extensions, which in turn will lead to needing new extensions. When you condition your hair, focus on the lower part of your hair and not near the top of your extensions.

Hair Products Matter

When it comes to shampoo and conditioner, making sure you have a sulfate-free shampoo is important for the health of your hair. Not using sulfate-free shampoos can lead to buildup in your hair and dry it out. The biggest thing for products with extensions is that they keep your hair hydrated. Another way to keep your hair hydrated is to use oil regularly. You should apply oil to your midshaft to the ends of your hair. Hair masks are another great product to keep your extensions hydrated. Using a hair mask once or twice a month will be the most effective. If you use heat to style your hair, make sure you use a heat protectant because high heat can burn and discolor blonde extensions and cause damage.

Sleeping With Extensions

When you sleep, you naturally move your head around, which can cause tangling in your hair and maybe damage to your extensions. To reduce the amount of rubbing on your pillowcase, you can use a silk or satin pillowcase. These reduce friction and frizz, so it is less likely to tangle your hair. It is also recommended to put your hair in a loose ponytail, loose top knot, or loose braids. These options are simple ways to help prevent natural tangling.
